Home Alone Boy Kills Burglar

A home alone teenager used his mother’s gun to kill a burglar in a shoot-out, South Carolina officials say.Police said the 13-year-old was in the house in Ladson on Tuesday lunchtime when he heard a vehicle pull up outside and someone trying to break in.

The teenager picked up his mother’s pistol and went to the back door of the property where he opened fire.

The unidentified boy told police the person outside fired back, said authorities.

The two suspects fled in their car, and the boy continued shooting at them as they drove away, according to an affidavit.

When police arrived they had to coax the boy, who was not injured in the shootout, from the home.

Investigators found a Colt .45 handgun in the area where the boy said the suspect had tried to gain entry to the house.

A grey Chevy Sonic car arrived afterwards at a local hospital with several bullet holes, said Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Lamar Brown, 31, a passenger in the car, was admitted with three gunshot wounds to an emergency room, where he died.

The car’s driver, Ira Bennett, claimed the bullet holes in his car came from someone firing at the vehicle on a motorway, the affidavit states.

The 28-year-old was charged with first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The boy’s mother, who was at work at the time of the incident, told the Post and Courier: “I’m speechless right now.

“Who knows how this would have turned out.”

She said she had never trained her son to use the gun that she told the newspaper she keeps at home for protection.

“I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to,” she said.
